The original documentary of Dallas radio legend Mike Rhyner follows the improbable rise of the architect of SportsRadio 1310 The Ticket, the first all-sports station in Dallas which redefined the genre and begat a cultural revolution in our fair berg.
Written, directed and produced by former FOX4 sports reporter Crystal Vasquez, Not in This Town is a trip down memory lane with vintage footage of Rhyner’s unparalleled career plus interviews with luminaries who were along for the ride, such as George Dunham, Corby Davidson, Randy Galloway, Dale Hansen, Brad Sham, John Rody of KZEW-FM and, yes, Greg “The Hammer” Williams.
Meet The Old Grey Wolf
Mike Rhyner is regarded as one of the most influential Dallasites of all time. With no radio training, he joined KZEW-FM in 1979 as an unpaid intern working on the Labella & Rody Morning Show. In 1994, Rhyner co-founded the first all-sports talk radio station in Dallas/Fort Worth, SportsRadio 1310 The Ticket. The radio station went on to receive three Marconi Awards for best sports radio station in the country. Rhyner is a member of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame and Dallas Press Club Legends. He retired from radio in January 2020 and now hosts a podcast on Vokal called Mike Rhyner is Your Dark Companion.
Meet the Director
Crystal Vasquez is the creator of CV Wonder Films and is a proud Navy brat. She studied broadcast journalism at the Mayborn School of Journalism at the University of North Texas. She carved her creative skills as a sports reporter at FOX4 in Dallas and weekend sports anchor at ABC7 Amarillo. She was introduced to Mike Rhyner while working as a traffic reporter at KTCK The Ticket. She enjoys golfing, playing music, and watching documentaries. Vasquez has a passion for storytelling and all the creative elements filmmaking combines.
